How the prices are worked out

Each price is the time the service takes on a medium car, scaled for the size of the vehicle, multiplied by your hourly rate. Products, water and fuel are added per job, and the result is rounded up to a figure you can quote.

The times shown are examples. Replace them with how long each service takes you on a medium car in ordinary condition. The size percentages then scale that time for smaller and larger vehicles.

Condition and travel

A price list assumes a vehicle in ordinary condition. Pet hair, heavy soiling and neglected paint all add time, so say on your price list that very dirty vehicles are quoted on inspection, or add a fixed surcharge for them.

If you are mobile, the drive to each customer is part of the job. Include it in the supplies and travel figure, and set a minimum charge so that a single wash still covers the trip.

Questions

How much more should I charge for a large vehicle?

In proportion to the extra time. If an SUV takes you a fifth longer than a medium car, charge about a fifth more. Enter your own percentages and the price list follows.

Should I charge extra for very dirty cars?

Yes, and say so before the customer books. A surcharge for pet hair or heavy soiling is normal, and asking for a photo at booking avoids an argument on the driveway.

What is the difference between a valet and a detail?

A valet is a thorough clean inside and out. A detail goes further: decontaminating the paint, machine polishing and applying protection. It takes several times as long and is priced accordingly.

Should I take a deposit?

For longer jobs, yes. A full detail takes most of a day, and a deposit at booking means that day is paid for if the customer cancels late.
